The reason there was split screen games on PS2 era is because the games weren't as taxing on the consoles. If you tried to make split screen on PS3/X360, it wouldn't work because the console would have to use 2X more power and it would just overheat the console. The reason for this is because it has to render BOTH of the locations where you are.

And as for Josh the topic hijacker, no you can't run two instances of Carbon at once on the same machine, even if it has dual monitors, etc. Nor can you split-screen or share keyboards as in days of old. EA hasn't had that capability in NFS since the Special Edition of NFS2.
